South Africa crush India

South Africa crush India

Graeme Smith led from the front, while Rahul Dravid disappointed with yet another below-par performance against South Africa as the visitors romped to a 10-wicket victory in the fourth match of the Pepsi Cup at Eden Gardens here today.
Having put India to bat and restricting them to a paltry 188, South Africa rode Smith’s unbeaten 134 to reach 189 without loss.

Smith was merciless on the Indian bowlers, both pacers and spinners, and while Harbhajan Singh managed to turn the ball, Smith stayed in command. A huge six off the offie, over the bowler’s head, underscored his dominance. And the near-packed Eden Gardens responded to his heroics in such a fashion that South Africa must have felt that they were at “home”. He sped to his century with a boundary off Harbhajan, through the cover and point. He scored 20 boundaries and one six. The crowd, missing Sourav Ganguly, booed as the Indian capitulation drew near, and chants of “We want Sourav,” and “Hai, hai Dravid” filled the air.
Andrew Hall played the perfect foil, staying unbeaten on 48. The South Africans, having won the toss and electing to field, made the most of the conditions. The only resistance from the hosts came in the form of a partnership between Mohammed Kaif and Yuvraj Singh for the sixth wicket, which yielded 81 runs.
