Leaders denounce India’s rigidity on Kashmir propos

Political leaders on both sides of Kashmir have expressed dismay at India’s cold-shouldering of President Pervez Musharraf’s proposal to grant self-rule to Kashmir and demilitarise some border towns.

Except for Congress Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who said these proposals had ‘no basis’ and have been made ‘without proper planning’, other pro-India parties such as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the National Conference (NC) and moderate pro-freedom groups have been voicing their support for Musharraf’s proposals.

Azad’s deputy, Muzaffar Hussain Beg chose his words carefully. A PDP leader, Beg asked Pakistan to provide the details and modalities of the proposed self-governance. While rejecting any immediate demilitarisation on account of continuing militancy, he said, “(The proposal) has to be implemented at some point in time, when both India and Pakistan reach a stage of ‘friendship and no bullets are being fired”.
