India Debuts Mobile TV Channel
Reliance Infocomm introduced a full-fledged English TV news channel on mobile phones in India Monday through its wireless carrier Reliance IndiaMobile, underscoring a trend among carriers to move into more lucrative offerings.
The channel, called Times Now, is a joint offering from Times Group, South Asia’s largest and most profitable media conglomerate, and Reuters. The streaming news will be available through Reliance IndiaMobile’s R World service. A similar channel that will run on televisions will premiere later this week.
Reliance premiered R World several years ago, treating users to cricket scores, Bollywood movie trailers, news clips, fashion, animation, and some location-based services for free until recently. Data downloads now cost a few rupees for 10 minutes or so of usage.
