India wary of agri talks

Following the meeting of the G-6 countries in London last week, intense discussions on agriculture are slated to begin at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) headquarters in Geneva starting on Monday. India has decided to wait for an agreement to emerge on the tariff reduction formula before it starts negotiating on its list of special products.

Special products are products which would not be subject to formula tariff cuts because of the sensitive role played by them in the economy of developing countries. According to the mandate of the current round of discussions , products affecting food security and livelihood concerns are to be excluded from tariff reduction commitments.

According to the G-33 proposal at least 20% of the total agriculture products being negotiated should be included in the list of special products.
