England lose a close match ahead of India one-day series

England suffered a five-run defeat in their only practice game ahead of a one-day series against India despite impressive half-centuries from Ian Bell and Matthew Prior here on Saturday.

England, chasing a 261-run target off 50 overs, were bowled out for 255 in the last over against the Rajasthan Cricket Association President’s team. The tourists, who squared a three-Test series 1-1 against India at Mumbai on Wednesday, will play seven one-dayers. The first match beings at Delhi on Tuesday. Middle-order batsman Bell top-scored with an 84-ball 71 while wicket-keeper Prior made 55 for the tourists, who were without key fast bowlers Andrew Flintoff and Matthew Hoggard. All-rounder Paul Collingwood (34), Kevin Pietersen (28), Kabir Ali (25 not out) and Ian Blackwell (23) were the other main run-getters for England. The hosts clinched the match with just one ball to spare when last-man James Anderson became the fourth run-out victim after making four runs. Earlier, middle-order batsman Mohammad Kaif slammed an unbeaten 119 to prop up the hosts. He struck two sixes and 11 fours in his 136-ball knock. He put on 72 for the third wicket with Suresh Raina, who contributed 49 off just 46 balls with the help of 10 fours. Collingwood was the most successful bowler with 2-28 off seven overs.

India series a test of consistency, says Strauss

India series a test of consistency, says Strauss England will face a test of consistency in the seven-match one-day series against India starting on Tuesday, according to batsman Andrew Strauss. "We haven't performed as consistently in one-dayers, particularly away from home," he told reporters on Sunday. England are second in world test rankings after a fine run in the last two seasons leading up to last year's Ashes triumph. However, they lie sixth in the one-day standings and just managed to avoid having to qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy in India in October. Only the top six as on April 1 qualify directly. Pakistan beat India by Duckworth/Lewis method

Pakistan beat India by Duckworth/Lewis method Sachin Tendulkar’s 39th century went in vain as Pakistan defeated India by seven runs via the Duckworth-Lewis method when poor visibility stopped play in the first one-day international here Monday. The Duckworth-Lewis method, applied to truncated matches, was used by the two umpires when the light became extremely poor in the dying moments of the match. When the game was finally stopped, Pakistan needed 18 runs off 18 balls. India, thanks to Tendulkar’s 100 (113 balls, 10x4s, 1x6), had made 328 in 49.2 overs. Man-of-the-Match Salman Butt’s century (101, 111 balls, 15x4s) guided Pakistan to

India lose, home series gone

India lose, home series gone An inexperienced and uncoordinated forward line, a weak game-plan and some sloppy defence cost India the third Test match 1-2 against Pakistan at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium here on Monday. Coach Rajinder Singh (Jr) said: “We allowed them to score freely. If seven players are unable to prevent a cross from completing then it’s a shame.” Pakistan took the lead early on as Tariq Aziz shot one straight off a cross from Shakeel Abassi (16th minute). That was after a dull 15 minutes of play with some half-chances from both teams. Pakistanis were dominant, thanks
