UK MP urges Pakistan and India to demilitarise LoC

British parliamentarian and attorney general Dominic Grieve has urged Pakistan and India to pull back troops from across the Line of Control (LoC).

A delegation of members of the British House of Commons from the Conservative Party was on a visit to Pakistan. The six-member delegation included Grieve, Paul Goodman and Syeda Warsi.

Addressing a press conference with Barrister Sultan Mahmood, the opposition leader in the AJK legislative assembly, the British legislator said, “New Delhi and Islamabad are declared nuclear powers and both states should explore venues to workout negotiated settlement of Kashmir dispute. However, solution of this complicated dispute is impossible without end to violence and participation of valley people in the ongoing talks process”.

He also urged both countries to withdraw troops from Kashmir so that the people of the valley could meet each other freely.Sultan said that India’s refusal to reciprocate the flexibility demonstrated by Pakistan on such issues as confidence-building measures had increased the problems of the Kashmiri people. “Indian troop brutalities in held-Kashmir are going on unabated and following Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s failure to announce on easing of border restrictions has further deteriorated the situation,” he said.

While the opening of five crossing points on the LoC, which was aimed at fostering contacts and interaction among the Kashmiris was a positive development, these were

India rejects outright Pervez plan India has rejected outright Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf’s proposal on demilitarisation of Srinagar, Baramulla and Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir for presumed Pakistani help to reduce “militancy” in the three towns. Instead of talking in quid pro quo terms on the question of acts of terrorism directed against India from areas under Pakistan’s control, General Musharraf should implement his unconditional pledge to stop cross-border terrorism, a spokesman of the External Affairs Ministry said on Saturday. The spokesman was giving the government’s initial response on Pakistan President’s TV interview in which he suggested India should demilitarise the

Leaders denounce India’s rigidity on Kashmir propos Political leaders on both sides of Kashmir have expressed dismay at India’s cold-shouldering of President Pervez Musharraf’s proposal to grant self-rule to Kashmir and demilitarise some border towns. Except for Congress Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who said these proposals had ‘no basis’ and have been made ‘without proper planning’, other pro-India parties such as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the National Conference (NC) and moderate pro-freedom groups have been voicing their support for Musharraf’s proposals. Azad’s deputy, Muzaffar Hussain Beg chose his words carefully. A PDP leader, Beg asked Pakistan to provide the
