India returns sermon to Vatican envoy

A week after Pope Benedict XVI attempted to insert himself into the domestic debate over the constitutional merit of the anti-conversion law and alleged religious intolerance in India, the external affairs ministry summoned the charge daffaires of the Holy See to convey Indias displeasure over the papal assertions.

Union minister of state for external affairs Anand Sharma told an agitated Rajya Sabha that a firm, appropriate and timely message had been sent out.

The Vaticans envoy was told in no uncertain terms that the government disapproved the (Popes) statement and was displeased by it. The ministers response came when BJP members led by Ravi Shankar Prasad expressed anguish over the papal remarks.
