Bt cotton: Lessons India can draw from China

Ever since MRTP Commission injuncted Mahyco Monsanto Biotech (India) Ltd (MMB) collection of trait value @ Rs 900 per 450gm of Bt cotton seeds and directed them to reduce the trait value to the levels of China, there has been lot of interest in the Indian media, farmers and seed industry about Bt cotton seed pricing and royalty collected in China.

In China there are two different Bt cotton technologies available. The Bt technology, developed by Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), which is the apex agricultural research body of China, was the first technology to get commercial approval in the year 1997.

By the year 1999, 20 Bt cotton varieties were developed for sale in China with this CAAS technology.
