Australia maul India

CHENNAI, Dec. 13. — India went down tamely as Olympic gold medalists Australia thrashed them 4-1, scoring all their goals in the first 20 minutes, in a third round league match of the Champions Trophy hockey tournament at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here tonight.

The hosts had raised visions of a good performance after their stunning come back 3-2 win over archrivals Pakistan on Sunday, but their hopes lay shattered with the Australian blitzkrieg sweeping them off their feet.
India, who suffered their second defeat in three matches after their 2-1 loss to Spain, found the consolation goal through Tushar Khandekar in the 31st minute, but could do little thereafter against a stronger opponent.
The defeat almost ended India’s hopes of the first podium finish since 1982. They still have a chance if they win the next two matches against the Netherlands and Germany.

Striker Nathan Eglington, who scored a brace, opened the flood gates in the first minute and scored his second goal in the 14th minute, while Dean Butler (12th) and Travis Brooks (20th) sealed India’s fate. Staying on course for an all-win record in the six-team league phase, the Aussies, eyeing to regain the title which they last won in 1999, put the Indian midfielders in total disarray with their crowding tactics in the first 20 minutes of play. The Olympic champions’ penetration almost from the half line, was breathtaking to watch and most often they marvelled with good stick work for interceptions.

Australia, India to explore nuclear pact

Australia, India to explore nuclear pact Australia and India will set up a working group to explore the detail of a nuclear pact that has put the issue of Australian uranium sales in the spotlight. A historic accord between India and United States last week put Australia's uranium sales policy in focus just days before a visit by Prime Minister John Howard to the subcontinent. Australia at first appeared willing to consider whether the pact could open the door for India to buy its uranium, even though it is not a signatory to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT). But Mr Howard backed away from

India asks Australia to relax uranium rule

India asks Australia to relax uranium rule After reaching a deal on nuclear issues with the United States, India is asking Australia to relax rules banning the sale of uranium. U.S. President George W. Bush and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh signed an agreement separating India`s domestic and military nuclear facilities and allowing some of them to be monitored by international groups. Singh said the move should be enough of a safeguard for other countries, like Australia, to normalize some relations. The Australian reports Prime Minister John Howard said he favors a review of Australia`s policy towards India, but won`t go forward until the

Agarkar has a lot to offer to India

Agarkar has a lot to offer to India Brett Lee walks in and asks in a very matter of fact manner: Are you expecting someone? It helps break the ice immediately. He carries no fast-bowler snarl with him. Rather its that smiling face you see, back home in India on advertisement hoardings of a watch company he endorses, which greets the media gathering. With Australia coming into the tri-series with an 18-member squad and a pre-planned rotation policy, Brett Lee has played in only one of the three games. More : dnaindia.com

Jayawardene says tough, tight one-day date with India While Mahela Jayawardene may not yet be Sri Lankas new Captain Cool, there are those who already see an on-field steely resolve—quite like Arjuna Ranatunga. Several former Test players also feel that its time the Lankan selection panel make Jayawardenes appointment permanent as Marvin Atapattus back injury continues to waylay his international career. And while the captaincy debate rages on the island, Jayawardene is not afraid to admit that Sri Lankas tour of India last October, where they lost the limited overs series badly, did much to educate the team on how to handle

Dhoni No. 2 batsman, India up to third

Dhoni No. 2 batsman, India up to third Indias 5-1 demolition of England has taken them to third place in the ICC one-day rankings while Mahendra Singh Dhonis excellent form propelled him to second spot among ODI batsmen.
