Wolfowitz says India is going towards smaller levels

Wolfowitz says India is going towards smaller levels

India is going towards smaller levels of World Bank lending, and that too mainly for the technical assistance that comes with the loans, World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz told FE on the sidelines of the IMF-World Bank annual meeting here on Monday.

For the past 20 years, the Banks focus has been on reducing poverty. However, India and China—the two countries with the largest number of poor people—have been witnessing rapid growth and easy access to foreign capital through FDI and FII inflows.

In the last 10 years, China has borrowed just $10 billion from the Bank, and that too mainly for the technical assistance. Wolfowitz sees India going the same way. An Indian project faces the choice between borrowing from the Bank or borrowing from global financial markets. This choice is made based on the interest rate and the technical knowledge that comes attached with the Bank loans.

At last, a win for India

At last, a win for India

At last the fragrance of victory. India huffed and puffed on a hazy, cloudy morning here to overcome South Africa and finish a poor 11th in the hockey World Cup. The only consolation out of the verdict is that India retains the chance of figuring in the Champions Challenge scheduled at Boom (Belgium) next June.

It would be churlish to presume the result on Sunday has restored a degree of prestige for India. Far from it. This is the first time in the history of World Cup that India has taken the 11th position, although it has the distressing experience of ending at the bottom of the table in 1986. India was 10th at the last edition in 2002.

Needless to say, the encounter was a now-or-never situation to remain in contention for competitions at the international level. And the team just managed that after a desultory performance. The only sparkling moment came when Rajpal Singh deflected a penalty corner by Dilip Tirkey midway through the second half.

India: An Outsider No More

India: An Outsider No More

For decades, India happily assumed the role of chief rock-thrower at the worlds political establishment. Freeing itself from colonial rule at the dawn of the cold war, India sought to find its own way to prosperity, separate from the influence and imperialism of the worlds great powers. So in 1955 it formed the Non-Aligned Movement with like-minded developing nations.

As the 14th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) begins Friday in Havana, however, India finds itself becoming increasingly entwined with the powers it once shunned, particularly the United States. As a result, India is having to straddle the divide between its historical role as an outside agitator and its future as one of the worlds emerging power brokers.

For India, it is a realization of its growing maturity as a nation. Its about how we move from being a protester of the world order to one who takes responsibility for the management of it, says C. Raja Mohan, a member of Indias National Security Advisory Board, a panel of civilian foreign policy experts.
